Welcome to the new Hale Center Insider! You'll notice as time goes on, this is NOT a newspaper but rather a place where we can all stay up-to-date on things going on in Hale Center and/or things going on with those from Hale Center who've moved away.   Heck, we'd even be honored to feature comments, pictures and such from those who just plain admire the old "Oasis of the Plains!"
We hope to be featuring a picture and brief bio on HC Alumni on a regular basis, usually taken (with permission) from Facebook.   If you'd like to be included and are not on Facebook, just send us a shot of your mug with a little braggadocio about yourself and just watch us post it!   We are a work in progress…grow with us!

Kay Carter Ward
Hale Center Native

By Sally Wright

Kay Carter Ward Mug

Kay Ann (Carter) Ward now lives in Omaha, Texas which is 45 miles west and south of Texarkana, off I-30.

I was born in Hale Center on December 25th, 1948 on a white Christmas. My parents were Lee B. Carter who has been in Heaven since 1992, and my mother, Laura B. Allen Carter has been in Heaven since 2007. They would have been 100 years old this year. I have a brother Jerry Carter who has been in Heaven since 1992, and my sister is Glenda (Carter) Blaine who lives in Hobbs, NM.

My family lived in Hale Center until November, 1957. In 1958, we moved to Plainview from Vernon. I graduated from Plainview High School in 1967 (with Carolyn (Rae) Curry). I attended Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas. Through the years I have had training with American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines. Also, had training with AAA (American Automobile Association) in management. I received my Certified Travel Associate certificate while there.

I have been married to Tom Ward for 8 years. We met when I was living in Ft. Worth through Match.com!!!! I know that will shock many people! My children are: Lawna Boles Greene who is 45 years old, lives in Stephenville, TX and teaches in Dublin. She is a Wayland graduate as is her husband. Audrey Boles was the long time registrar at Wayland and she was Lawna's paternal grandmother. Kyle Boles lives in Amarillo, TX. He works for Phillips in Borger and graduated from TSTC in Amarillo. Also, the grandson of Audrey Boles.

When I asked about her grandchildren she said they include: Trevor Greene, stillborn and buried in Plainview. Born in 1988. Lauren Greene is a student at Wayland. Taylor Greene is a senior at Stephenville, Texas High School. She plans to attend Tarleton State University. Luke Boles and Audrey Boles both live in Amarillo.

I worked in management for American Automobile Association in Amarillo, Dallas and Irving, TX. I had started in the travel industry in 1982 in Borger. I have also worked in the oil and gas industry, managing field offices.

I was a member of Hale Center First Methodist Church. At the age of 22 I received Christ as my Savior after watching a Billy Graham Crusade on TV. I have been a Southern Baptist since the 70's.

I have not had military service, but my husband served a total of 41 years for our country. I was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, Borger Study Club, and currently a member of Eastern Star.

Hobbies and Interests: I read, especially historical novels. I love anything about England and can never go there enough times! Scrapbooking is supposed to be a hobby of mine, but I can't sit down and do it. Of late, reading all I can about working with vintage items to make a useful and/or decorative piece out of them. "And by the way, is there any way to get any cups from the gin that I think were attached to a conveyor belt and would scoop the grain? I am needing them for a project." I also enjoy photography. I especially like to photograph old broken down buildings, animals and flowers.

I have enjoyed many things in my life. My parents saw that we were musically trained. I have played clarinet, accordion, organ and piano. I have served as church pianist. While working in the travel industry I was blessed to be able to travel to many destinations in the world. I used to think about how a little girl from Hale County, TX could have gotten to do so much and see so much.
