Kay Carter Ward
Hale Center Native
By Sally Wright
Kay Ann (Carter) Ward now lives in Omaha, Texas which is 45 miles west and south of Texarkana, off I-30.
I was born in Hale Center on December 25th, 1948 on a white Christmas. My parents were Lee B. Carter who has been in Heaven since 1992, and my mother, Laura B. Allen Carter has been in Heaven since 2007. They would have been 100 years old this year. I have a brother Jerry Carter who has been in Heaven since 1992, and my sister is Glenda (Carter) Blaine who lives in Hobbs, NM.
My family lived in Hale Center until November, 1957. In 1958, we moved to Plainview from Vernon. I graduated from Plainview High School in 1967 (with Carolyn (Rae) Curry). I attended Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas. Through the years I have had training with American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines. Also, had training with AAA (American Automobile Association) in management. I received my Certified Travel Associate certificate while there.
I have been married to Tom Ward for 8 years. We met when I was living in Ft. Worth through Match.com!!!! I know that will shock many people! My children are: Lawna Boles Greene who is 45 years old, lives in Stephenville, TX and teaches in Dublin. She is a Wayland graduate as is her husband. Audrey Boles was the long time registrar at Wayland and she was Lawna's paternal grandmother. Kyle Boles lives in Amarillo, TX. He works for Phillips in Borger and graduated from TSTC in Amarillo. Also, the grandson of Audrey Boles.
When I asked about her grandchildren she said they include: Trevor Greene, stillborn and buried in Plainview. Born in 1988. Lauren Greene is a student at Wayland. Taylor Greene is a senior at Stephenville, Texas High School. She plans to attend Tarleton State University. Luke Boles and Audrey Boles both live in Amarillo.
I worked in management for American Automobile Association in Amarillo, Dallas and Irving, TX. I had started in the travel industry in 1982 in Borger. I have also worked in the oil and gas industry, managing field offices.
I was a member of Hale Center First Methodist Church. At the age of 22 I received Christ as my Savior after watching a Billy Graham Crusade on TV. I have been a Southern Baptist since the 70's.
I have not had military service, but my husband served a total of 41 years for our country. I was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, Borger Study Club, and currently a member of Eastern Star.
Hobbies and Interests: I read, especially historical novels. I love anything about England and can never go there enough times! Scrapbooking is supposed to be a hobby of mine, but I can't sit down and do it. Of late, reading all I can about working with vintage items to make a useful and/or decorative piece out of them. "And by the way, is there any way to get any cups from the gin that I think were attached to a conveyor belt and would scoop the grain? I am needing them for a project." I also enjoy photography. I especially like to photograph old broken down buildings, animals and flowers.
I have enjoyed many things in my life. My parents saw that we were musically trained. I have played clarinet, accordion, organ and piano. I have served as church pianist. While working in the travel industry I was blessed to be able to travel to many destinations in the world. I used to think about how a little girl from Hale County, TX could have gotten to do so much and see so much.

Cindy (Faith) McKinney
(Hale Center Alumni)
I was born
and raised in Hale Center. In fact, I was the first baby girl born in the new hospital in Hale Center (Hi Plains Hospital). Byron Nicholson was the first baby. My parents, Smokey and Margaret Faith still live in Hale Center. I have one brother, Randy, who lives with our parents there.
I graduated in 1966. The memories of our close friendships are irreplaceable. Living in Hale Center meant that everyone knew everyone. And you better not do anything you didnít want your parents to know because they would find out before you got home. While in high school, I played basketball and was a twirler in the band. These experiences where some of the best memories I have.
After graduation, I moved to the Dallas area and married George Prather. Shortly after we were married, George was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany where I was able to join him. Germany was so beautiful and a great experience for a girl from such a small town.
I have three wonderful children. Scott Prather, who lives in Combine, Texas, is a supervisor at Sears. He and his beautiful wife Juli have been married for 7 1/2 years.
Amy Faith Barber also
lives in Combine (next door to her brother). Amy has her Master degree and was assistant principal in Crandall. Last year she decided to take a year off and go back to school. She now has her real estate licenses and works for Rmax. Amy and her husband, Brandon, have been married 17 years and have two beautiful daughters, Breanna Faith and Brittyn Grace.
Amber Prather Montes lives here in Mesquite. Amber and her husband, Chris, have been married 5 years. They have a son, Kaden. Amber is a stay at home mom.
I went to work for the Mesquite ISD and worked for 29 years. I started as secretary for the Director of Transportation and later became the Extra Curricular Coordinator. When I went to work we had 30 employees and 28 buses. When I retired in 2008 we had grown to 250 employees and 130 buses. I really loved my job and worked with some of the best people you would ever want to know. I still miss the people and the wonderful friends I made through the years.
My husband, Clyde and I have been married for 9 years. We love to travel. When I retired we took a month and drove over 3,000 miles. We have traveled to all but 6 states in the United States. We have been on 2 cruises and have another planned for next year. We spend a lot of our time going to the grandkids basketball games. Both of us love basketball and are so blessed to be able to live close enough to our grandchildren to attend their activities.
In my spare time I love to do scrap booking. Last year I made each of my children a scrape book with all the mementoes I had kept through the years. I had such fun doing it and all the wonderful memories it brought back of my children growing up. I also inherited some (not enough) of my mother's talent and have made 3 quilts and working on the fourth.
We attend New Haven Baptist Church in Dallas. It is a small church but the people are so very loving. My son, Scott and daughter Amber also are members of this church. It is really nice to be able to attend church with your family.
I have been so bless in my life. My children all live within 20 minutes of me and are there if I need them. I can see my grandchildren, love them, spoil them and send them back home all in the same day. I have had a wonderful life and to think it all started in the little town of Hale Center, Texas.
