02/16/16 - RE: General E-mail
My name is Mia Valdez. I lived in Hale Center for six years. I like to be kept informed of what\'s going on in Hale Center. I met a lot of people there and also attended Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. We moved to Lockhart Tx after my husband got cancer to be closer to MD Anderson in Houston for his treatments.

11/23/14 - Loss of Confidence in Officials
Dear Terry and Sally,
I have something I want to remind you of as we are all going through this mess. And yes, I call it a mess. You hired someone at the Big Dog that had done some terrible things to my family and me. I talked to you about his actions and told you that I was having a very hard time with him and his actions. I warned you of how he treated people but I did not request that you fire him. I did not ruin his name publicly all over town. I did not ask you to put it on the news. We have people who are elected to take care of the employees of the city and the school, just like you took care of your own employees. They are doing their best, just like you tried to do your best with the above mentioned employee.

You claim to being doing this in the name of Christ, but He commanded us to love one another. We all have faults and we all make mistakes. It seems that more and more people tend to "kick 'em while they are down" and this breaks my heart.

I cherish our friendship as well as the friendship that I have with others involved, and this has all been heavy on my heart so I felt I needed to share my feelings.

In His Love,
Elaine Barrett - Hale Center, TX

Why not have a town hall meeting? Seems to me that if those involved are so sure they have not done any wrong doing, then a meeting with the community would be a walk in park! Have all those who have been mentioned, not just Sally and Terry. But Chief Burton, Josh Jones, the principal of High School, the superintendent, the coach and whoever else named in any of the recent wrongdoings. Which have been brought to light by the Wrights. It is also possible that their are many others, not named in these editorials, that knew or know about certain aspects of these "brushed under rug" type of incidents. Especially so those who hold high position here in little old Hale Center steer clear of any criticism that makes them look bad, when it us quite possible that they are doing things not on the up and up to keep certain folks happy so they stay in their positions. I've read in past years that this is a retirement community, a Mayberry community. Quite frankly, I think Andy and Barney probably could do better here in HC. At least with keeping things honest! But why a lawsuit? Terry and Sally didn't run to the courts to see these things resolved. They CALLED OUT all of you involved in these allegations, in the open, in public. Without worrying about their reputations, without worrying about friends who potentially would turn their backs on them. That doesn't sound like people with an agenda, just some good folks who care about their community and the people who live here. Anybody can say they are strong, have good values and character. But if we as a human beings can't OWN our wrongdoings, OWN what we've done wrong and accept the criticism, especially those who claim to uphold the law. Then you do not need to lead! We need someone that is going to give us security in the town we live in, to give us peace of mind when it comes to our children in school or walking down the street.

Mr. Wright, as a citizen of Lubbock and a former citizen of Hale Center I find it deeply concerning that you, as a professional would write such a Terrible article about a person. Whatever your reasons may be, you as a writer and professional should tell both sides of the story. This article was very one sided and unjust! Leave the past where it is, after all didn't the chief just lose his daughter? I am in no way affiliated with Mr. Burton, but I do however read a lot of your articles, and this one is the last I will read.

7/05/14 - RE: Reader's Respose to Editorial: Old Fashioned | Not Always Politically Correct - And Not Trying To Be
My take regarding you're "Not Always Politically Correct": According to my King James Concordance, the word "Hell" is mentioned in the Bible at least 34 times. Jesus, a perfect person who would not use profanity used it, as in Matthew 10-28. Usually it refers to a place of punishment, a place a person wouldn't want to be sent to, but also as a place of unquenchable fire and brimstone. In other words a very hot place. Heaven is also used about 40 times to mean a perfect place, a place we want to be. You've heard the term "heaven on earth." We get the meaning of the phrase yet we know no place on earth could be as sweet as heaven, in God's presence. Comparing some place as hot as hell as described in the Bible is the same thing. Jesus used the term so how could it be bad as a word? We know no place is as hot as hell but we get the meaning of the phrase. Terming a motorcycle event as "Hotter than Hale Center" does not offend me, and I dare say most people!
As I understand the meaning intended...harmless and not profane. Besides, the word "hell" wasn' used; it was hotter than Hale Center, referring to a great little town, my home town, certainly not threatened by a play on a Biblical word.

You guys are great and are doing great things for Hale County!! REALLY!!

5/24/14 - RE: Watley Gym...Watley Who?
Great story about Watley Gym. I finished high school in 1946 and the gym was built soon after. I think in 1947. When I graduated, the only gym was in the old Ward school that was destroyed in the tornado. I remember Ward and Dorothy Watley. My sister graduated with Dorothy in 1945.

I finished Hale Center High in 1946. That was before the Watley Gym was added on to the school. It was probably added in 1947. When I graduated, the only gym was in the school on 6th street. I also remember Ward and his sister Dorothy. My sister, Clara, and Dorothy finished H.C.H.S. together in 1945.

3/23/14 - RE: What Happens to the Claude A. Burnett Agency
Marilyn's dad ( Marilyn Davis King,) Wade Davis established that business as a Farmer's Union insurance branch. When he died suddenly in 1963, His wife Betty attempted to run the business for a short time. Claude, who was in the grocery business bought her franchise out. Thus, a lasting business began on the streets of HC. He even took over Wade's location. Claude went door to door to get local business.

3/15/14 - RE: Carole A. Bell Article
Kudos to Carole Bell with her article "How to Teach Your Children about Food!" She is right on the mark and made some great suggestions for young parents. I was raised on garden food and I grew a garden myself when my boys were young. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to do that. As adults my 3 sons eat very healthy, often putting me to shame. I like to think I helped create those good habits for them in addition to their athletic pursuits.

10/07/13 Re: "POST-HOMECOMING" - I totally agree with Mary Hill. We need to keep our HOME side clean. I was at the Homecoming game and I myself picked up several pieces of trash from the ground between the concession stand and the stands. It was everywhere. 07/30/13 Re: "MOSQUITO SPRAYING" -
Hi Sally & Terry. Was listening to your show this AM and wanted to comment on something you are talking about. The spraying going on there for mosquitoes. As I'm sure you're aware, I'm into 10 years of Parkinsons. There is no positively known cause of, nor no cure for this thing. Only medications for the symptoms. At the forefront of testing is the possibility it could come from exposure to chemicals. Thinking back to my years of living on the farm, many, many examples of this exposure comes to mind. The kids of HC would follow the fogging machine down the alley, getting covered with the mist. On the farm we were in constant contact with every insecticide, herbicide, pesticide (notice the word "cide" as in suicide.) Spray planes were something to go aoutside and watch fly over your house, and on and on. These things eventually get into your system and eventually affect the brain. You might remember Willie Teeter, a brother in law who passed away several years ago from complications of Parkinsons. We lived side by side on farms in HC. As I say, nothing has ever been proven but it is something to consider. So, try to limit your exposure to these chemicals. Could be something to it. Keep up the program, I love keeping up with HC.

I saw several kids walking home from school yesterday kinda hanging around picking up things from there???? 12/17/12 Re: House Numbers Ordinance -- I knew that if I posed this question to ya'll that you would find out an answer for the rest of us. In today's edition of the Hale Center American there is an article that says residents must install numbers and states that the ordinance requires uniform numbers on the front of houses. What exactly do they mean by uniform numbers? Is everyone in Hale Center expected to have the exact same number style, size, etc, also I thought that the number thing was kind of settled with the numbers on driveways, sidewalks etc, which I guess that means no, since they are saying house numbers on front of house. We would not want to get the wrong style, etc just because we were not sure what we should be getting. Can you clear this up? Thanks, Melisa, Hale Center, TX

09/20/12 Re: Lose 10 lbs by Halloween  Greetings on Oct.1 2012! One week down and 2 lbs OFF....1000 cals a day, except one day my flavored coffee creamer ran me up to 1100! 5 of those 7 days I did 30 mins of cardio exercise, on my Cardio Glide machine.

For the past 4 yrs. my wt. has fluctuated from 2 to 7 lbs above my wt. goal, depending on whether I had been "good or bad!" I want to loose 10 lbs so my wt. can then fluctuate 2 to 7 lbs. below my "goal" wt. so that even when I'm BAD I'll still be GOOD! ;)

07/09/12 Re: New to Town!--I made some comments on the 8th that I regret making and I now want to retract those statements. When I made those comments I was thinking about income for the city; and since then I have had time to think about what liquor here could lead to. We do NOT need liquor here; Hale Center is dry and needs to stay that way. We certainly do not need a Wal-Mart here to put other establishments out of business. Please forgive me for making those comments without thinking them through first; that will never happen again.

07/08/12 Re: New to Town!--I am new to Hale Center and I am interested in the growth of, and the town, but I don't want to see the town get real big. Gary and I moved here from Lubbock on November 4, 2011. We have joined the Chamber of Commerce and First United Methodist Church. I also plan to run for city council next year. The way I see it, keep as much money here as possible. If people are going to go out of town to spend their money on food and alcoholic drinks, that just means less income for the city of Hale Center. Hale Center may as well offer beer, margaritas and wine to be served with meals; but there needs to be a limit. No one should ever walk out drunk to get in a car and drive off. We need to keep as much income in the city as we can. It is too bad we can't have our own Wal-Mart; that would mean jobs and income for Hale Center.

I remember way way back when all the good times spent at the "park" when it was really shady. The old fiddles contest the numerous booths set up the smell of the food and yes back then the smell of the horses and my old boss Claude B. out directing the traffic and keeping things moving. Those were some good ole days and some great memories that I have.
Thanks for posting the pics for us that arent there.

05/03/12 Re: Mission Hale Center; -- Many years ago, I met a kind, good-hearted and giving woman by the name of Naomi Brown.  She was always someone to be admired for her sweet and giving spirit.  Honestly, it always left me in awe.  Her lagacy here in town now lives on through Mission Hale Center.  Many people donate to the mission, but countless hours are spent by a few women for free, giving of their time, so that those who are in need will have those needs met.  After a story I recently heard, I just want remind everyone to remember that the Mission is a gift to us by Naomi.  Please remember to say "Thank you!" to those who give selflessly and consider that without these giving spirits there would not be a Mission.

02/11/12 Re: EMS Response Time Concerns -- How fast should the EMS respond after a 911 call is placed?  This morning my father called 911 because he was having chest pains.  He waited for the ambulance to arrive and when they did not show up promptly he drove himself to the EMS building.  This bothers me because should'nt they arrive quickly. Shouldn't a HC police officer arrive also to check what is going on?  Or does it depend on the person?  When I arrived at the EMS building they had my dad in the ambulance.  Well not they, there was only one man there.  Apparently, the driver or other EMT was not answering the phone.  I assume that was the delay in them getting to my father's residence.  An EMT that lives in Plainview had to drive to HC to drive the ambulance.  I am just very glad that my father did not have a heart attack either while he was waiting at his home or there in the back of the ambulance while another EMT arrived.  My father is now at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock.  It is upsetting to know how long he waited, then had to drive himself to the EMS.

Question?  Were Midway Cafe and Ben's Cafe, run by Ben & Lynn Carr, one and the same.  If not, where was Midway Cafe.  I think the one I called "Ben's Cafe" next door to "Clark's Garage" seated 200, twenty at a time.  :) He served "turnovers" and the best pies in town.  I know because my mother, Mrs. Stephens, made most of them.

10/08/11---Time to Write  The word Nothin" is a big word in a small town.  I grew up hearing it from my older brother and sister; as a teenager,I finally lived it.  There is a knock at the door... "Do you want to go ridin around?"  "Yea,what are we gonna do??"-- "Nothin".  When I got home for the evening I was always asked, "What did yall do?"..... (answer):  "Drug Main".  (Next question), "Who was there?"...(answer):  "Nobody, we just road around and listened to music." .... exit to the bedroom and smile about "Nothin".

Funny thing about this is, while I was out doing "Nothin"... the adults in H.C. were looking out their windows or sitting on the front porch doing the same thing... "nothin" ... kinda.

My story about "nothin" in a small town is about the big West Texas Sky and the dirt roads that go on forever...(as long as you keep it between the ditches).  It's about having fun but bringing harm to no one...(or breaking the window when you want to set off the DQ alarm).  It's about running that 8 track and dragging main till you hit the right song...(as long as it's not past your kerfew) Parking, dancing, and talking at White's Auto -- it wasn't nothing but good clean fun... and a whole lotta "nothin".

Dear Terry & Sally,
I couldn't find the ad you placed for me in the Insider...but I am so grateful. The people who came to apply, (and there were about 5) told me about it, and their replies. 11/15/14 - Loss of Confidence in Officials
I agree for a need to hold a Town Hall Meeting before a decision to hire a city manager is made.

An executive session is necessary for discussing City employees, however when action is taken it must be in an open meeting and open to the public. I also believe any meeting must be posted a certain number of days before that meeting with time and place stated. To take any action before this cloud over our town is cleared would be a mistake by our Mayor and Council members.

Hi, my name is Diana, long time resident of Hale Center. I am very curious about the events that happened this past Tuesday. Personally, I despise city manager Josh. And to be honest, I fully believe that what ever personal or issues with the city manager and the superintendent SHOULD be publish to the public because it is PUBLIC RECORDS. Excuse my language **** JOSH JONES AND **** DENNIS BURTON. They are a disgrace to the city of Hale Center. And if you want to know please feel free to email me back.

07/03/14 Re: "SEEKING MEDICAL RECORDS"
Hello to everyone in Hale Center,
I'm a private investigator in Kansas working on behalf of a woman who lived as a child in the Hale Center area. We are trying to locate her medical records, especially from a hospital stay in Hale Center about 1976 - 1977. She recalls that there was a Centers for Disease Control study or investigation related to her hospital stay at that time.

If anyone in Hale Center worked at the hospital back then, or recalls CDC activity from around 1976 -1977, or has any information on where the hospital records might be kept, it would be deeply appreciated.

If you can help, please contact me at the information below. Please rest assured, there is no litigation or legal action associated with this request. We are simply trying to help a former Hale Center resident find her missing childhood medical records.

With thanks,

9/21/13-- Re: "POST-HOMECOMING"
Sally and Terry,
l wasn't sure if l should address this to you guys or the school administration. The mess that was left on our side of the football field by our fans was absolutely horrible! l have never seen quite the mess as there was left friday night. Olton's side was cleaned up by the band kids and some of their fans. They ate supper from the food that was sold at Akin, for the F.F.A. and when they were through they put all the trays in the trash cans. l was told that Farwell, Lockney and other various schools have their kids help pick up their trash before they leave the grounds. What has happened to us being proud of our schools and our grounds and our community?

My parents' yard was in need of mowing and Ronnie stopped, unloaded his mower and did just that. When Dad asked him what he was doing, he replied he had a dream the night before and this is what he was suppose to do. Now, folks that is an example we should all look up to!! Thanks, Ronnie! ! 07/09/13 Re: "Editorial: DEADLY FORCE IN HALE CENTER" -
Sally & Terry:  Thank you for the Insider. I have written several lawmakers and five Presidents, no one agrees with me or is it people don't care? I will never understand why there is a Harsher penalty for killing a dying person than a living person? We LIVE about nine months and die for about seventy-eight years. The penalty for killing us before we are born (living) is zero, the penalty for killing us while we are dying (after we are born,) about seventy eight years can be from zero to death? I don't understand.

I have read the comments from the city manager very carefully. I will say this, he does have a way with the WORDS. I just want it to be known that I DO NOT feel that this is the time for a tax increase of any kind. I realize that the council voted 5-0 for the increase, but I am also aware of the fact that MOST of the votes end up being 5-0, so that does not impress me much. I would be running around the church like most kids do, but when I heard the piano keys start to ding I always stopped in my tracks to listen. The last time I saw her was when I was visiting plainview and I ran into her at a restaurant. It was so Good to have gotten a chance to catch up with her and she remembered my whole family. She was a God filled woman and one of the sweetest I have ever known. She truly is going to be missed. Alcoholic beverages are mind altering and hinder the judgement of the drinker. Some people can handle one or two drinks with a meal.....if they haven't already had a few before they even got to the restaurant. Others can't. That's the ones that ruin the atmosphere for other diners. Personally I'd just soon they did their drinking at home and stay at home until they are over the effect of it!

I lived the bigger part of my life in Hale Center and still have family there! Over the years alcohol abuse has been the cause of a lot of heartache and deaths in Hale Center. 03/29/12 Re: Historic Akeson House -- I spent a lot of time in that house taking piano lessons (along with Rosalind, my sister).  I loved going upstairs to Roberta's room.  Sometimes, after a lesson, Mrs. Akeson or Roberta would bring out her china doll.  I thought that was the prettiest thing and wished I had one.  I enjoyed petting their cocker spaniel.  It was fun to go outside while Rosalind had her lesson.  I would explore the front garden or go out the kitchen door to get fresh apricots and eat them (in season, of course).  The kitchen was small by today's standards but I liked all the decorations on the shelf running high on the wall.  Thanks for writing about the house.

01/17/12 HC-TRIVIA Who Lived There???---Here is an old timer's trivia question.  On Cotton Center highway, just west of the Hale Center city limits there used to be a big mansion looking house.  The remains of it are in the left side of the fifth picture in the archive link. (Click the link to see the picture)  When I was a kid, in the 1950's, I remember passing it and thinking really rich people must have lived there at one time.  Does anyone know who lived there and when, etc.?

01/20/12 Re: HC Trivia Question---The old house on the west edge of town was the Nick Alley home.  Mr. Alley owned the bank in Hale Center around the turn of the last century.  I believe the home was built around 1904.  I believe the Alleys were pioneers in irrigation, drilling some of the first wells around Hale Center.

I remember going in it a couple of times.  Once was probably when the Bowens lived there when I was young.  The second was later when it was abandoned and open.  It had been a beautiful home with amazing woodwork everywhere. It was a shame that it burned.

I also recall that arson was blamed for the fire.  Seems likely, as there was no gas or electricity hooked up at the time.

12/09/11 Re: Cemetary Care---In Reply To:--Wayne Johnson- Yes, I did clear debris away from the headstones.  Do you have someone you love laid to rest here?  Are you speaking on behalf of the agency because you know what they do as part of taking care of it or are you assuming?  Even if they are not getting funding, you would think they would ask for donations or volunteers to do something like you mentioned in your response.  I am not sure why you are taking it as a personal attack, but there were obvious differences in the way it was taken care of and the way it is now.  I will take you up on your offer to spend time (weekend or even more) yearly to take on this task.  I invite anyone else who is interested to participate as well.

Hale Center Cemetary is a small town unfunded cemetary. Perpetual care is not part of the plan when buried there.  I have one question and one suggestion.  Did you clean your grandparents graves and if you are that concerned why don't you set up a day the community can come help you care for it on a yearly basis.  It  s easy to set on sidelines but something else to participate.  I would be glad to help.
Your comments were the disgrace in this case.

Re: Band Uniforms

To Whom it may Concern:
I was just wondering whose idea it was to change the band uniform colors so that our High School band now looks like a tiny TT band. Forgive me, but I was in the Band under the tutelage of individuals like J.W. King and Harold Bufe, and there was a great pride in representing the school in our blue and gold. I stopped by briefly to see a portion of a home game and was shocked when the band took the field in black and white!! I am hard core old school blue and gold. There is a rich heritage in those colors, and excuse me I find it rather tacky that you have your football players representing in blue and gold and your band takes the field in TT band colors. To me it is heartbreaking when you see the visiting teams band proudly wearing and representing their school (colors). Still waters run deep and so does blue and gold. When it comes to HC, if you would by chance cut me, please do not be shocked if I bleed blue and gold, because as I stated, I am hard core old school blue and gold. I eat, breathe, and sleep blue and gold. Don't get me wrong, change is good, but there are some things that should be left alone.

Blue and Gold to the Core,
Urail (Compton) Mackey

10/30/11 Re: HC Band Uniforms----Just saw the article about the new band uniform colors. I played all the sports during my days at HC and took great pleasure in our colors of blue and gold. I was really proud when I wore my "letter jacket" to the different towns, and automatically they knew I was from HC. Don't know if people now days would be confused by a jacket that was blue and gold and black and white, might loose something in the interpretation. Oh well, life goes on, but just saying....Langley Fruin Class of 1955 # 13.

7/20/2011------
Hale Center Is MY Town!!!
Kay Carter Ward, HC Alumni
I have been sitting here reading the email and so many of these people I remember from the 50's. I have truly missed having news from Hale Center. My dad was Lee Carter who was the Ag teacher from 1946-1951 (?). For a couple of years he was manager of the hospital and I remember the new doctor, Dr. Freeman, in the back seat of our car. I don't know where we had picked him up, but as I recall it was when he was first coming to Hale Center. Later, my dad taught Social Studies to some of your readers. That was in the mid 50's. We left there in 1957 and my sister and I wish we had never left. We had an older brother, Jerry Carter who stayed behind with Roe C and Forrest Byrd so he could graduate there. Hale Center, you were the picture of a perfect town of the 50's. Everything was good, wholesome and fun. We lived across the alley from the old Methodist Church that burned. I remember my dad being Santa Claus at the church. I told Ruth Barnett that was my dad and she shhh’d me so the other children wouldn't catch on! Our house that my dad built has now been razed and I've been told the highway patrolman bought the property.
We love you Hale Center and all you did for us. You let us ride our bikes without fear of being kidnapped. We played outside and walked with our friends and to school and back without fear. And the football was awesome! Remember when Coach Hoss Byerley was given a new Plymouth?
---You (Hale Center) gave us an image of what it was to grow up in a well-rounded loving community. How we miss the Rastatter's, Roe C. Byrd, Ralph and Bonnie Ayres, the Byerley's, Burnett's, Shook's, the Riley's groery store, McMennamy's, Shelley's, Buddy Keeler who always had a piece of gum for a little girl and many, many others. You gave us so much and we cannot begin to repay you. For those of you who are related to the folks we loved during that time, thank you for sharing your loved ones with us. They helped make us who we are.
And Terry, I think I know who your mom is. I think she was older than my brother. A beautiful young woman. And by the way, does anyone who was at the old junior and senior high in the mid 50's remember one rainy day when a girl got hit by a car near the old gas pump? My dad and mom drove her to the hospital and I remember it so well. I've always wondered who that was. She was not seriously injured.
God bless you Hale Center and all who called it home or still call it home.

3/17/14 Re: Cayce Short of HC Turned 101
Happy Birthday to you Cayce. I grew up listening to you, Cayce, "on the piano," Ed Campbell, "on the drums," and my Dad, Loyd Huntsman, "on the bass fiddle." Nearly every Saturday night, there was a "jam session" at our house - (it was at our house cause we had the piano!) I still have that piano and it has never been played again like Cayce Short played it! That was such a fun, special time for our three families. As some of you may remember, they played for many special happenings in Hale Center over the years. I will never forget what happy unforgettable years those were. THANK YOU CAYCE for contributing to my happy, happy memories.

Love to you,

02/14/14 Re: "Reader Email to Police" - Chief Burton, I was wanting to ask about the trucks parking on Avenue K and the end of 11th St. We have nearly been hit there a couple of times because they obstruct the view from 11th St. You have to pullout on to the middle of the street to see if there is oncoming traffic. Sometimes its in both directions, when there is another truck on the other side close to the corner. With the morning traffic from Akin and Middle School we have other cars and trucks nearly getting hit. Is there anything that can be done about their parking? Could they maybe park closer to the new baseball field?
Thanks,

Melisa Hill
Hale Center

Regards to the trucks on Ave. K...could they not park closer to the baseball field further down or even in the dirt area there....

just asking
Bebe Gomez

I just wanted to comment on other tractor trailers being parked residential areas where they are prohibited by the ordinance. There has been a truck parked in the area of 4th and Ave H at a residence, on the curb since yesterday. It is obstructing the view also.

Name Witheld by Request

POLICE RESPONSE

I too saw the tractor-trailer rig parked on Avenue K this week and witnessed the hazard you mentioned. I did go to the truck driver's house but he was not home, but the next day it was moved. I agree that having the trucks further north (or south) would be better for school traffic. Avenue K is one of the areas designated by city ordinance trucks may park, and most of these operators have been cooperative in working with the city. We will urge these tractor-trailer operators to have their vehicles positioned better so not to obstruct other drivers' views. We will however enforce any traffic and parking violations.

Thanks for your interest

Because I have a 'few years on me' I too remember my mother & grandmother working the garden & fields. I had not heard the word 'mess' for awhile; as in 'a mess of vegetables.' I got a good laugh. Kim is very clever in the way she works God given bounty in with the grieving process. It truly does take a lot of tilling of the heart & emotions to come out with a clean slate. I often take on a job that seems beyond the physical capabilities of an old lady but as I start I just keep telling myself to focus on small progress & I keep going until I have figured out how to complete my task & then when I'm through I feel such pride & can enjoy what I've done. 05/01/13 Re: "When was our District Formed?" -- Did anyone ever answer Jackie King's question about the beginning of HCISD? It brought to mind two things:

The old school that was in the 400 block of west 6th street when I was a kid. First and second grade were held there until the 1965 tornado destroyed it. As I recall, the sign on the front said "South Ward 1906"

Second is the story of Epworth and Hale City combining in 1893 to form Hale Center. The story is that the schoolhouse from one of the towns was loaded on wagon wheels to be moved to the new town site. Someone objected, and obtained a restraining order prohibiting 'any man' from touching the building.

The women of the community wanted the school moved, reasoned that since none of them were men, they weren't subject to the court order, and hitched up the horses and moved the building.

At least that was the story that Tom Rambo put in the "Hale Center American".

07/23/12 Re: Insider's 7/20/12 Police Report about riding horses in HC-- This is so interesting. I grew up in Hale Center. Texas. From 1958 to 1968. This is when you could ride Horses down town anytime no problem. It's amazing how soon we forgot the true days of the wild west. We are slowly loosing history by the handfuls. Our true further is at risk, what will our great-grandkids have to learn except but looking in a book. I live in Weatherford near Fort Worth, Texas. There are Horses everywhere because we are the "Cutting Horse Capital of the World." Come see us sometime. And to add to this, this was the time that Kent Kelley, Mike Jones, Bobby Temple & Dale Kisor decided to climb the Hale Center water tower. The four of them thought the tower needed a face lift. LOL!! Imagine that the four of them, along with a few others, knew how to keep excitement going in our little town. Thanks to Henry Jones, & My Dad, Leroy Kelley, they got things worked out and we never had this happen again.

This may offend the consciences of many persons but there are a couple of points to remember.

Allowing alcohol sales will increase Sales Tax Revenue to Hale Center. Which can help either reduce real estate taxes or increase services offered by the city and it will bring more business to Hale Center and expand employment.

The common response is there will be increased DWI. People who will drink and drive will do it if alcohol is sold in Hale Center or not.

Then there is the issue of freedom. Is anyone feed up with increased goverment intervention in our lives? Then why do it ourselves?

04/09/12 Re: General Emails --This is Marie Thomas I have just finished all the stories about People I have known for years and, by the way an interesting story about Marie Berlin Steward Thomas.  I had a good life with the years I spent with my growing into an adult; My first husband Fred Steward and a Kind gentle Husband Glen Thomas.  I Thank God for all of my 90 yrs.  I have two Wonderful children Gary and Brenda.  I have lived around Hale Center off and on most of my life, and have lived in the city of Hale Center, in the Home Glen Thomas had built for Him and I 37 yrs ago.

03/27/12 Re: Alley House Recollections --I would like to mention that the Alley home that burned belonged to Robert Alley.  I think Nick Alley lives east of Hale Center.  Nick's son, Nick Jr., built a home on the east corner of 10 and Ave. J in Hale Center.  Robert Alley had two granddaughters who were in school here back in the 1940's---as was I

03/09/12 Re: "Disgruntled Reader" -- I would like to know how so much is posted on this website but some things are just left unknown.  How important would it be for our parents to know that an elementary teacher grabbed another student and only received probation and still allowed at all school functions and to teach.  How about the teacher who threatened his wife and now has left the school...If things are posted about city officials, why not school employees who are near our kids?

10/08/11----I enjoyed the 'clean up the city' article about helping those who need it  First Baptist Church in Tulia has a "Sunday Serve" when anyone can ask for a crew to come do jobs they are too incapacitated to accomplish.  No church service; just get off that pew & REALLY do the right thing.  Some of us olders cook goodies to be taken to shut-ins with a visit for their lonely souls.  The year our old fence could not stand up against the little breezes God sent our way, the whole church ended up in our backyard bracing the fence.  Youngsters pounded old nails back in, teens mowed, etc.  Harold got to supervise the whole loving adventure.  The Pastor had his best sermon right there!  The clue is GET OFF YOUR PEW. .............Diann Dougherty Tulia TX

7/27/2011----As I read the emails about how people are connected to HC I want to put in my claim. My sister Polly Heath & Harold H owned Mayfield Spraying. She taught Sunday School at HC Methodist forever. Rocky was featured in my story about the grand old flag. He & his 3 sisters (Kay, Gail &Jana) went HC school. Mary Wright Garrison knew them when she worked for the city. The elder Heaths lived there as did Harold's brothers. I would go visit as a teenager and as I got a family they always loved that area. Harold was Air Force & they always flew the American flag so when my Harold got out of the Army & we bought our first home they sent us our first of many American Flags. That's where the tradition of "Keep Your Eyes On That Grand Old Flag" began. Today, July 27, would have been Polly's 90th birthday. I always thought everything she did was perfect & Harold H was my first crush all dressed up in his uniform, so I just developed a thing for 'Harolds'. I still wear the sapphire ring he bought me; probably to win my sister. It no doubt cost him most of his monthly pay but he won the most beautiful girl in Texas and put stars in my eyes! My children have fond memories; they thought Hale Center was a metropolis with everything! And now it has Wright Broadcasting, so how much better can it get?
