HCISD Band Hall
To Be Named after Former Director

(05/13/15 Keith Bearden) - Great News! The school board approved the naming of J. W. King Band Hall last evening! Hopefully the dedication ceremony will happen on July 4th. Mr King spent 17 years as band director in HC. He held other positions in Canyon and Plainview after leaving HC.

According to the Texas Music Educators Association's website:  J. W. King was born April 17, 1921 in Roscoe, Texas, and graduated from high school at Loraine, Texas in 1939. He attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, earning his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Education. He was a member of several Air Force bands during World War II. Professionally, he has been Director of Bands at Westbrook High School, 1941-42; Big Spring High School, 1947-53; Hale Center High School, 1953-70; Canyon High School 1970-79; and Assistant Director at Plainview High School, 1979-1983. He has also been active in summer band camp activities, having taught in The Texas Tech Band Camp for 15 years, the Midwestern State University Band Camp for 25 years, and the West Texas State University Band Camp for a total of 32 years. J. W. Has served as President of Alpha Chapter, Phi Beta Mu, President of the Texas Bandmasters Association, and President of TMEA. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, and the American School Band Directors Association. In 1977, TBA recognized J. W. as Bandmaster of the Year.

The school district according to Supt. Krug, will also fund the proper signage on Lester Carr Middle School. Mr. Carr spent 44 years as teacher in Hale Center. A new entrance is being constructed at CMS so the name won't be up until construction is complete.
