Gary Eli Douglas
Funeral Services will be Friday, October 5, 2018

(09/15/18 Insider Obituary Archives) - Gary Eli Douglas passed away peacefully on September 29, 2018 after a 14-month courageous battle with ALS. He was born on September 11, 1946 in Plainview, Texas to N.L. and Juanita McAnelly Douglas and lived his first 16 years in Hale Center, Texas. He graduated from Belton High School in 1965 and from Sam Houston State University in 1969. Coming from a family of public-school educators, he began his career as a math teacher and football and basketball coach at Bonham Junior High in Temple, Texas. Gary changed his career path in 1971 when he joined Highlands Insurance Company where he worked until 1998. In 1999 he became a partner in Simpson-Benson-Douglas Insurance Agency in San Antonio. He retired in 2012.

Gary loved his family, and enjoyed being in the country, playing golf, and hunting. He had a fierce loyalty to his family and his country. His sense of humor and smile were unforgettable.

In July 2017 Gary was diagnosed with ALS and he fought the fight with bravery and dignity. Even after he lost his ability to speak, he had a way of smiling his unforgettable smile with a twinkle in his eyes.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jeanne; his son, Grant Douglas and wife Shelby; granddaughter Jentry Douglas; grandsons, Jax LeGrand and Jaden LeGrand; his brother, Leon Douglas and wife Carolynn of Georgetown; his sister, Beverly Coonrod and husband Jim of Friendswood; his mother-in-law, Polly Parnell of Holland and Temple; his brother-in-law Rob Parnell and wife Sara of Coppell; his uncle Eli Douglas and wife Joan of Highland Village; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Ben Parnell.

A graveside service will be conducted at the Holland Cemetery on Hwy. 95, Holland, Texas on Wednesday, October 3rd at 11:30 am. A memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Alamo, San Antonio, Texas on Friday, October 5th at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to ALS Association — Texas Chapter, 4939 De Zavala, Suite 105, San Antonio, TX 78249 (ALSTexas.org) or the charity of your choice.
